Content Warning: Suicide
Dear Reader,
A few weeks ago, our peer Rachael Shaw-Rosenbaum ’24 died by suicide. Rachael is remembered by her classmates for her talented, brilliant mind and her kind, forgiving heart. Her death was heartbreaking and a sobering reminder that the mental health struggles of students at our University remain pervasive and unabating. The Yale community will continue to mourn her death as we grow and heal together. As you appreciate the work featured in this edition, we ask that you keep Rachael in your hearts and minds. While we at The Layer are working to create a platform for discussions of student mental health, we recognize that these topics are incredibly close to the heart and asking for help is not always easy. During times of grief and loneliness, we hope you are able to find comfort in friends and loved ones as well as support those around you.
If you are struggling with your own mental health, as many of us do, help is available. While it is easier said than done, your life is worth fighting for. Please find available mental health resources listed below.
With Love,
Caroline Silver
President of the Yale Layer
